When the PS4 arrived, horror fans had spent years watching their favorite series turn into action games. The PS4 years brought the scares back. Capcom took Resident Evil into first person and made it frightening again. Shinji Mikami, who created Resident Evil, started a new horror series at Tango Gameworks. Hideo Kojima teamed up with Guillermo del Toro on a free download that Konami later pulled from the store for good.
Small studios found their own way in, with games where you cannot fight back at all and your only option is to hide. Then PlayStation VR came along and made some of these games much harder to sit through. Here are the 19 best PS4 horror games.

19. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2015)
Revelations 2 marks the return of Claire Redfield as the lead, and for the first time Barry Burton is a playable story character in the main series. The story is told in four episodes. Claire and Moira Burton carry the past scenario, Barry has the present one, and the first episode was released in February 2015. It is also the first Resident Evil game without Alyson Court as the voice of Claire.
Only two of the four playable characters use guns, so the partner without one handles the sneaking. Played alone, you switch between the two to solve puzzles. With a friend, it is a co-op game from start to finish, and Raid Mode returns from the first Revelations with new missions and characters. Critics liked the setting and the co-op but criticized the graphics.
18. Outlast II (2017)
Red Barrels announced a sequel in October 2014, after the first Outlast became a hit. It was delayed several times and finally came out on April 25, 2017. You play Blake Langermann, a cameraman, and Langermann possesses only a camcorder with night vision. The night vision lets you see in the dark, but it drains the batteries. This camera is better than the one in the first game, with zoom and a sensitive microphone that picks up distant footsteps.
The developer said it was made "to make you feel like a rat in a maze". Critics praised the sound design and the atmosphere. The gore and the difficulty got most of the criticism. Players who make it through say it is one of the most frightening games they have played.
17. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (2019)
Man of Medan is the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology, which Supermassive started after the success of Until Dawn. The premise comes from the urban legend of the SS Ourang Medan, a fabled ghost ship. Its characters end up on board, and the ship's cargo includes Manchurian Gold, a hallucinogenic bioweapon from World War II. That goes about as well as you would expect.
The studio cut a single playthrough down to about five hours so you would go back for the other outcomes. You can play it with a second person, and critics commended the cooperative modes and the branching story. They were less kind about the controls and the technical shortcomings, and reviews were mixed. Jason Graves wrote music meant to reflect the swaying waves of the sea.
16. Resident Evil Village (2021)
Village is the sequel to Resident Evil 7. You play Ethan Winters again, and this time he searches for his kidnapped daughter in a European village filled with mutant creatures. It was announced at the PlayStation 5 reveal event in June 2020, but it came out on PS4 as well, on May 7, 2021. Like the game before it, it uses a first-person view and has the option for a third-person view.
The village is run by lords. One of them, Karl Heisenberg, can manipulate electromagnetic fields and leads an army of Soldat simulacra from a factory. Village leans further into action than 7 did, and the variety of its areas is the draw. It won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards and had sold over 10.5 million units by November 2024.
15. The Quarry (2022)

Supermassive made The Quarry as a spiritual successor to Until Dawn. The teen counselors of Hackett's Quarry have the camp to themselves for one final night, and you control the fates of all nine camp counselors. Every choice can change the relationships, the plot and who is still alive at the end. It came out on PS4 and PS5 on 10 June 2022.
The team was influenced by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Deliverance for the locals. A movie mode lets you set each character's personality traits and watch the story play out with no input from you. Critics praised the cast performances and the homages to classic horror films, but found the endings abrupt. Players usually recommend it in the same breath as Until Dawn.

14. Resident Evil 3 (2020)
The Resident Evil 3 remake was developed alongside the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, and both run on Capcom's RE Engine. You play Jill Valentine, who spends the game being pursued by an engineered mutant called the Nemesis. The original was more about action, so the developers made movement faster and added the ability to dodge attacks. It came out on PS4 in April 2020.
Nemesis does not take hints.
Critics praised the tense atmosphere and the graphics. The main complaints were its short length and the amount of content missing from the original, and some critics were disappointed by the heavier focus on action. None of that stopped it selling: the game had sold 10.2 million copies by September 2025. Play it after Resident Evil 2, while the city is still fresh in your head.
13. A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019)

A Plague Tale is set in mid-14th century Aquitaine, France, during the Hundred Years' War. Amicia de Rune and her ill brother Hugo flee from soldiers of the French Inquisition and from hordes of rats that are spreading the black plague. Up to 5,000 rats can appear on screen at once. You control Amicia, using stealth and a few tools to slip past soldiers or knock them out, and solving puzzles along the way.
Asobo Studio made it as its first original game since the racing game Fuel in 2009. The studio wanted a story-driven game inspired by The Last of Us and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It sold over one million units by July 2020, and a sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, followed in 2022. Expect more dread than jump scares.

12. P.T. (2014)
P.T. is a psychological horror game that Kojima Productions made under the pseudonym "7780s Studio". Hideo Kojima directed it with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and it was released for free on the PlayStation 4. You walk the same hallway again and again. A radio reports on a familicide, and a hostile female apparition, presumably named Lisa, starts showing up. When you die, you are back in the first room and the loop starts all over again.
After Silent Hills was cancelled, Konami removed P.T. from the PlayStation Store and made it impossible to reinstall. That made the decision famous for all the wrong reasons. P.T. has been cited as among the greatest horror games of all time, while its puzzles drew mixed responses. Players still recommend it years after it vanished.
11. Dead by Daylight (2016)
Dead by Daylight puts one player in the role of the Killer and the rest as Survivors who repair generators to open the exits. A caught Survivor gets hung on a hook, and only other Survivors can unhook them unless they have a perk that lets them do it themselves. When only one Survivor remains, an escape hatch opens at a random spot on the map. A trial only ends when all Survivors have escaped or died.
It was first released for Windows on Steam in 2016 before coming to PS4. Over the years it has added crossovers with horror films and other games, so you can be chased by killers you already know. Reviews were mixed at launch, but it has since attracted more than 70 million players. Players call it fun, especially with friends.
10. Little Nightmares (2017)

Little Nightmares came out in April 2017 for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One. Equipped with only a lighter, a small girl sneaks through the bowels of the Maw, a massive, underwater iron vessel. Up in the Guest Area, huge visitors gorge themselves on food. The team wanted to explore the "wild extremes" of childhood, and that shows in how small and helpless you are next to everything else on the ship.
Critics praised its atmosphere and art design. It is creepy more than scary, which makes it a good pick for someone easing into horror. Players recommend it warmly. Three extra chapters followed between July 2017 and February 2018, and the series went on with Little Nightmares II in 2021 and Little Nightmares III in 2025.

9. The Forest (2018)

You are the lone survivor of a passenger jet crash, and the forest you land in belongs to a society of cannibalistic mutants. You gather what you can, use a crafting system that rewards experimenting, and build a camp to survive. Dark caves and sparse music do a lot of the work. The game spent four years in early access starting in 2014 and reached PS4 in November 2018.
The story has an ending, and after the final cutscene you can keep surviving on the peninsula for as long as you like. Players say it is best played with friends. Building a cabin together while something watches from the trees is a very specific kind of team bonding.

8. Outlast (2013)
Outlast was Red Barrels' first game, although the team had worked on series like Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell at Ubisoft. It came out on Windows in September 2013 and on PlayStation 4 on February 4, 2014. A whistleblower named Waylon sends an anonymous email to Miles Upshur to expose Murkoff's inhumane experiments, and Miles goes in to see for himself. Running and hiding are all you have.
Critics praised its atmosphere and horror elements. Miles also learns that the experiments were originally part of the MKUltra program, which is not a comforting thing to find out halfway through. As of October 2024 it has a playerbase of 37 million. Players rate the first game very highly, and they keep naming it next to Alien: Isolation.
7. The Evil Within 2 (2017)

Detective Sebastian Castellanos goes back into STEM, descending into the world of Union to rescue his daughter, Lily. Shinji Mikami stepped down as director and supervised the game as producer, handing the director role to John Johanas. You can take enemies on with guns, or use stealth and sneak behind them for silent kills. A crafting system lets you make ammo from what you find, and Green Gel upgrades Sebastian's abilities across five skill trees.
Development began in March 2015, right after the team finished the first game's downloadable content. Critics praised its visuals and atmosphere and picked at the story. Players recommend it warmly, and the more open areas make it a different game from the first.

6. The Evil Within (2014)

The Evil Within was directed by Resident Evil series creator Shinji Mikami. Tango Gameworks built it on id Tech 5, and it came out in October 2014. The story runs across 15 chapters. The game first used a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, until a 2015 patch let players play in full screen. The asylum was inspired by the Winchester Mystery House, the California mansion famous for its architectural curiosities.
It set the record for the highest-selling first month for a new survival horror series, until Dying Light broke it. Critics praised its horror and atmosphere but criticized the story and technical issues. The hardest difficulty is AKUMU, the Japanese word for nightmare, and it earns the name. Players usually recommend it together with its sequel.

5. Soma (2015)

SOMA is a sci-fi horror game from Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Its underlying theme is consciousness, and it explores the nature of free will and the self. You face corrupted humans and insane robots deep beneath the ocean waves, and there is no fighting back: either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run. The atmosphere was inspired by the work of Philip K. Dick and Greg Egan.
Caitlin Cooke from Destructoid gave it a 9/10, and Game Informer's Tim Turi gave it an 8.5 out of 10. Leon Hurley at GamesRadar+ called it "worth it overall" despite a slow start. Players praise it highly. The ending is the part people bring up years later.

4. Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Resident Evil 2 on PS4 is a remake of the 1998 game, and it reimagines the story with redesigned maps and characters. It plays more like Resident Evil 7, with an over-the-shoulder camera. Leon S. Kennedy, a Raccoon Police Department officer on his first day of duty, meets Claire Redfield, a college student looking for her brother Chris. A Tyrant keeps finding Leon, and the police station never feels safe again.
The 1998 original was directed by Hideki Kamiya with Shinji Mikami as producer, and it is the best-selling Resident Evil game for a single platform. The remake came out for PS4, Windows and Xbox One in 2019. Players rate the remake very highly. Ammo and healing stay tight the whole way, so every zombie you leave standing is a choice.

3. Alien: Isolation (2014)

Alien: Isolation is set 15 years after the original 1979 film and follows engineer Amanda Ripley, voiced by Andrea Deck. Creative Assembly designed it to look like the original Alien instead of the more action-oriented Aliens, down to a lo-fi, 1970s vision of the future. The team planned it as a third-person game and switched to first person for a more intense experience.
You get a revolver and even a flamethrower, but ammunition is limited and the game is about evasion. A noisemaker can pull enemies in another direction while you sneak away. It sold over two million copies by May 2015 and won Best Audio at the 2015 Game Developers Choice Awards. Its length drew some criticism. Players rank it among the most frightening games they have played.

2. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Resident Evil 7 is the first main Resident Evil game to use a first-person view, and the first full-length game on Capcom's RE Engine. Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil: Revelations, led the team. They took inspiration from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead and scaled the game back to one location. Ethan Winters goes to a derelict plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana, after an email from his wife Mia, missing for three years.
Critics called it a return to form for the series. The PS4 version is playable in virtual reality via PlayStation VR, and players say VR is the way to play it if your nerves can take it. As of June 30, 2025, it has sold 15.4 million units, the 2nd best-selling game in the series.

1. Until Dawn (2015)

Until Dawn was first planned as a first-person game for the PS3's motion controller, PlayStation Move. The motion controls were dropped when it became a PS4 exclusive, and it came out in August 2015. You guide eight characters through one long night, and the Butterfly Effect system means any choice can have consequences later. All eight can survive, or all eight can die. A strict auto-save stops you from reloading a decision you regret.
Rami Malek and Peter Stormare are in the cast, and Jason Graves composed the soundtrack. Sony did little marketing, but its sales surpassed expectations. Critics praised the branching story and the quick time events and criticized the controls. Players recommend it more than any other PS4 horror game.

Which one to play
There you have it, the whole list of the best PS4 horror games. The top five are as good as horror got on any console that generation.
If you are not sure where to start, play Until Dawn. For classic survival horror, start with Resident Evil 2 and then move to Resident Evil 7. If you own PlayStation VR, play Resident Evil 7 in it. If you want to be hunted, Alien: Isolation and Outlast are the two to try. For playing with friends, The Forest is the pick. And for a hidden pick, try Soma.
