The PS4 was a great place to catch up on games you missed. Big hits from computers and other consoles kept landing on it, and you got to play them on the couch with a controller. Ten of these twelve started on computers. The other two came from Microsoft and Nintendo consoles: Rise of the Tomb Raider from the Xbox 360, Rayman Legends from the Wii U.
There is a survival sim, a farming game, a metroidvania and a neon murder spree in here, all of them games that made their name somewhere else and found a second home on the PlayStation 4. Here are the 12 best PS4 ports.

12. Subnautica (2018)

Subnautica left early access on PC in January 2018, and the PS4 version followed on December 4, 2018. Unknown Worlds Entertainment announced it in December 2013, with Charlie Cleveland as director and Hugh Jeremy as producer, and Gearbox Publishing put out the physical console versions. You play Ryley Robinson, a survivor of a spaceship crash on an alien oceanic planet known as 4546B. You explore an alien ocean, crafting equipment and piloting submarines further down.
The game sold over 5 million copies by January 2020, and its reviews were generally positive on every platform. Players warn that the PS4 version struggles with its frame rate, and still recommend it. That tells you how good the ocean is.

11. Hotline Miami (2014)

Hotline Miami came out on Windows in October 2012, then on the PS3 and Vita in 2013. A PS4 version with cross-buy followed on 19 August 2014. Dennaton Games, a duo made up of Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin, built it over nine months as their first commercial release.
It is a top-down slasher with a neon look, set in Miami in 1989. A silent hero known to fans as Jacket commits massacres against the local Russian mafia, and wearable animal masks give you different abilities. That is a lot of murder for something this pink. The game sold 1.5 million copies by May 2015. Several artists contributed to the soundtrack, which mixes many music genres. Early reviews liked the gameplay and atmosphere, though some criticized the controls. Players single out the soundtrack and tell newcomers to play it loud.
10. The Elder Scrolls Online (2015)

The Elder Scrolls Online came out on Windows and macOS in April 2014 and launched with a mandatory monthly subscription. It was the first project from ZeniMax Online Studios, and it is set on the continent of Tamriel, a millennium before Skyrim. Its console debut slipped twice. By the time it reached the PS4 in June 2015, the March 2015 relaunch as Tamriel Unlimited had made the subscription optional.
Reception improved significantly after that relaunch, and a big new chapter has arrived every year since. PS4 players could not join the PC crowd, because cross-platform play covered only Windows and Mac. The game had sold over 15 million units by 2020, so plenty of people did not mind. Players say dropping the subscription made it worth a try.

9. Rogue Legacy (2014)

Rogue Legacy came out on Windows on June 27, 2013, and reached the PS4, PS3 and Vita together on July 29, 2014. Brothers Kenny and Teddy Lee made it at Cellar Door Games in Toronto, and a physical edition from IndieBox followed in December 2014.
You play a family one character at a time, and when one dies, you choose the successor. Gold found while exploring the castle can be used to improve the character's equipment and abilities, which are passed on to that character's heirs. Fairy chests hide in special rooms around the castle, and most ask you to complete an objective, such as taking no damage in the room, before they open. So dying is not the end of the run, just the start of the next heir's. Players call it addictive.

8. Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)

Rise of the Tomb Raider came out on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in November 2015 and on Windows in January 2016. The PS4 waited until October 11, 2016, for the 20 Year Celebration edition. It adds Blood Ties, a combat-free mode in which Lara explores Croft Manor, and cooperative play for the endurance mode.
Crystal Dynamics made it, with Eidos-Montréal providing support. The Xbox timed exclusive caused confusion among the gaming press and players. The story follows Lara Croft as she ventures into Siberia in search of the legendary city of Kitezh while battling the paramilitary organization Trinity. Players name it among the best-looking games on the PS4 Pro.

7. Don't Starve (2014)

Don't Starve was Klei's first foray into the survival genre, and the studio released it on computers on April 23, 2013. The PS4 port, renamed Don't Starve: Giant Edition, came out on January 7, 2014, before the Vita and PS3 versions. The game follows a scientist named Wilson who finds himself in a dark, dreary parallel world and must survive as long as possible while avoiding surreal and supernatural enemies that try to kill and devour him.
The title is the whole tutorial. It is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic. It sold one million copies by the end of 2013, and critics praised its art style and its many ways to die. Players rank it with the best indie games on the PS4.

6. The Walking Dead (2014)

Telltale's The Walking Dead came out one episode at a time, starting on Windows and Mac OS X on April 24, 2012. In November 2013 Telltale announced a Game of the Year Edition for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 with the five episodes and the 400 Days DLC. A year later, in October 2014, the PS4 and Xbox One versions came out.
It shares a universe with Robert Kirkman's comics, and it became Telltale's fastest-selling title. You play Lee Everett, a convicted criminal who becomes the guardian of a young girl named Clementine as a zombie apocalypse begins in Georgia. By the end of 2012 it had sold over 8.5 million episodes, and it won Game of the Year awards from several publications. Players praise its story.

5. Rayman Legends (2013)

Rayman Legends was announced as a Wii U exclusive, then came out on the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, Vita and Windows in August and September 2013. The PS4 and Xbox One versions followed on February 18, 2014, with uncompressed textures and shorter loading between levels. On the PS4, a second player can control Murfy with the DualShock 4 touchpad.
It is the fifth main Rayman game and the direct sequel to Rayman Origins. Murfy the greenbottle first appeared in Rayman 2: The Great Escape and can cut through ropes and activate mechanisms. The release was delayed again by six months and the game was made multi-platform, which is how it ended up on the PS4 at all. Critics praised its visuals and level design. Players call it a great platformer and a good pick for co-op.

4. Warframe (2013)

Digital Extremes released Warframe on Windows in March 2013 and ported it to the PS4 for the console's North American launch on November 15, 2013. The studio had planned a PS4 version, but the console was not out until November 2013, so it put the game on Steam first to find players. You play a member of the Tenno, a caste of ancient warriors who wake in Earth's far future to find themselves at war with different factions.
The concept dates to 2000, when Digital Extremes began work on a game called Dark Sector. It is free-to-play, and every non-cosmetic item can be earned in the game. It reached nearly 50 million registered players by 2019. Cross-platform save arrived in December 2023. Players file it with the PS4's free-to-play games.

3. Hollow Knight (2017)

Hollow Knight came out on Windows on 24 February 2017 and on the Switch on 12 June 2018. The PS4 and Xbox One versions followed on 25 September 2018 as Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition, and four free expansions came out between 2017 and 2018. Its world is Hallownest, a bleak insect kingdom: adorable, right up until the first boss.
Team Cherry, founded in Adelaide by artist Ari Gibson and web designer William Pellen, wanted to make a game inspired by older platformers. The idea came out of the Ludum Dare game jam in 2013, and Team Cherry revealed the game on Kickstarter in November 2014. It had passed 1 million sales on PC by 11 June 2018. Players call it one of the best metroidvanias.

2. Stardew Valley (2016)

Eric Barone made Stardew Valley by himself over five years and released it on Windows on February 26, 2016. He was heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon series, with additions to address some of those games' shortcomings. The PS4 and Xbox One ports were announced at E3 2016 and came out on December 14, 2016, with retail copies from 505 Games.
You inherit your late grandfather's run-down farm and manage it by clearing land, growing seasonal crops and raising animals. The game is open-ended. A multiplayer mode arrived in a later update. It sold 50 million copies by February 2026. Players call it a game to relax with.

1. Minecraft (2014)

Minecraft started on computers, created by Markus "Notch" Persson. Its console versions came from 4J Studios, beginning with the Xbox 360 edition on 9 May 2012. The PS3 and PS4 editions came out on 17 December 2013 and 4 September 2014. The PS4 edition was planned as a launch game but slipped, months after the PS3 one.
In Survival mode you gather natural resources such as wood and stone to craft blocks and items, and Hardcore mode adds permadeath. In December 2019 the PS4 got the Bedrock Edition update, which brought cross-platform play with a free Xbox Live account. Microsoft had bought Mojang and the game for US$2.5 billion in November 2014, weeks after the PS4 edition. Players recommend it for split-screen play on one couch.

Which one to play
There you have it, the whole list of the best PS4 ports. Most of them started life on a computer, and every one of them found a big new crowd on the PlayStation 4.
If you are not sure where to start, play Minecraft. If you want something to relax with, Stardew Valley is the one. If you want a great platformer to share, go for Rayman Legends. If you want a story that sticks with you, try The Walking Dead. And for a hidden pick, Hotline Miami is short, loud and strange.
