10 Worst Wii Games

The Wii sold so well that every publisher wanted a piece of it, and not all of them cared how good that piece was. Birthday shoppers grabbed whatever had a famous face on the box, so the shelves filled with rushed film and cartoon tie-ins, and with shooters that waved the remote around and called it a day. Even big names had a bad year.

Some of these are dull, some are broken, and a couple are more interesting than their scores suggest. Here are the 10 worst Wii games.

10. Heavy Fire: Afghanistan (2011)

Heavy Fire: Afghanistan gameplay on Wii

Heavy Fire: Afghanistan is an on-rails arcade shooter by Teyon, published by Mastiff, and the third game in the Heavy Fire series. The series started on WiiWare with Heavy Fire: Special Operations in 2010. It is set in modern-day Afghanistan, with tanks and helicopters, and up to four players can shoot together on one machine. It came out on the Wii and the PS3 on November 18, 2011, and the 3DS version was renamed Heavy Fire: The Chosen Few. It averages 41 out of 100.

Players bring it up mostly as one more light-gun shooter for the Wii. That is a fair summary. You point, you fire, the targets keep coming, and nothing about it will stay with you once the screen goes dark. It only makes this list because the better shooters on the system do the same job with more care.

9. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes (2009)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes gameplay on Wii

Republic Heroes is a Krome Studios tie-in to the Clone Wars cartoon, set between its first and second seasons. Depending on the level you control two Jedi or two clone troopers, and as a Jedi it plays like a beat 'em up with parkour. A fixed camera angle is used throughout the entire game, and reviewers named it one of the most criticized parts of the gameplay. It came out on six systems on October 6, 2009. It averages 46 out of 100.

Players almost never bring it up. A lightsaber game should be an easy win, which is what makes a stiff camera so hard to forgive. It was one of the better scores on this list, and it still lands here because it had every advantage and wasted them.

8. SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom (2008)

SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom gameplay on Wii

Globs of Doom is the fourth and final game in the Nicktoons Unite! series, and the first console one not made by Blue Tongue Entertainment. SpongeBob teams up with Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom, Invader Zim and Tak against alien goo that brainwashes whoever it falls on. In Bikini Bottom, Bubble Bass eats a goo-covered Krabby Patty and grows gigantic. Food safety was never the Krusty Krab's strong point. The music was composed by Todd Masten. It averages 38 out of 100.

The few players who remember it say it was fun. Kids will happily watch their favourite cartoon characters team up, and that is the whole pitch. The cast is the best thing on the disc, and the game around them never keeps up.

7. Soulcalibur Legends (2007)

Soulcalibur Legends gameplay on Wii

Soulcalibur Legends takes the fighting series and turns it into a hack and slash adventure made by Project Soul for the Wii. It is set between Soul Edge and Soulcalibur and follows Siegfried, sent by the Masked Emperor to find the missing shards of Soul Edge. Seven characters are playable, and one of them is Lloyd Irving, a guest from Tales of Symphonia. It was released on November 20, 2007 in North America. Reviews were mixed. It averages 42 out of 100.

Players hardly bring it up. Fans of the fighting games wanted a duel and got a crowd of enemies to swing at instead, which is a strange swap for a series known for one-on-one fights. The story is a fun detour for people who love the lore, and that is about all it has going for it.

6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 gameplay on Wii

The game of the first Deathly Hallows film turns Harry Potter into a third-person shooter, with a cover system like the one in Gears of War. It was released on 16 November 2010 in the United States. In the stealth missions you sneak around under the Invisibility Cloak, or with Polyjuice Potion. Critics liked its tone and criticized its gameplay, and one big games site gave the Wii version 2 out of 10. It averages 44 out of 100.

Players never mention it. A wizard hiding behind a wall to shoot at enemies is a very odd way to adapt a book about friendship and magic. It felt like a different game that had been given a wand and a scar.

5. The Golden Compass (2007)

The Golden Compass gameplay on Wii

The Golden Compass was the last game Shiny Entertainment made before it was merged with The Collective. You play Lyra and her dæmon Pan, or the armoured bear Iorek Byrnison, and Lyra's levels are mostly platforming and puzzles. The game was released prior to the film and features a slightly different sequence of events towards the end of the story. Reviews were negative on every platform, and many reviewers said the plot made no sense unless you had seen the film or read the book. It averages 39 out of 100.

Players barely mention it. Reviewers also pointed to graphical glitches, bugs and a general sense that the game was rushed to release before it was ready. That is the story of most film tie-ins from these years, and it shows here.

4. Ju-on: The Grudge (2009)

Ju-on: The Grudge gameplay on Wii

Ju-on is a horror game for the Wii directed by Takashi Shimizu, the director of the Ju-on films, and its publisher called it a "haunted house simulator". It was developed by feelplus and published in Japan by AQ Interactive on July 30, 2009. You point the Wii Remote to aim a flashlight that runs on batteries you find along the way. The game also measures how much the remote moves, and the more you flinch, the worse you do. A second player can set off scenes with another remote while you play. Critics panned it. It averages 40 out of 100.

Horror fans put it on their lists of Wii games worth picking up. It is clumsy and short on scares, but the flinch meter is a clever trick, and it is hard to find another game that punishes you for being scared.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 gameplay on Wii

Part 2 lets you play as more than Harry: Neville and Molly Weasley get turns too, all from an over-the-shoulder camera. Three face buttons hold two spells each, and you press one twice for its second spell. It was released on 12 July in North America. Critics thought it improved on Part 1 but still faulted its enemy AI and its repetitive combat, and the Wii version scored 47 out of 100 on the biggest review aggregator. It averages 38 out of 100.

It never comes up when players talk about the Wii. Once you have seen the first few duels you have seen them all, and the spell buttons do not change that. It was the last Harry Potter game of its era, and it deserved a better send-off.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2013)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gameplay on Wii

This was the first game based on Nickelodeon's 2012 Turtles cartoon, a beat 'em up by Magic Pockets for Activision, released in North America on October 22, 2013. It has four Turtles and no mode for a second player. Even the 3DS version, which critics liked better, was called repetitive and uninspired. That version was later bundled with another Turtles game and released as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Master Splinter's Training Pack on November 3, 2015. In January 2017 Activision pulled it from digital stores when it let the license go. It averages 38 out of 100.

Players don't talk about it at all. Four heroes who are famous for fighting side by side, and not one friend allowed to join in. That one choice says more than any review score.

1. Far Cry Vengeance (2006)

Far Cry Vengeance gameplay on Wii

Far Cry Vengeance is Ubisoft Montreal's remake of the Xbox game Far Cry Instincts: Evolution, with new weapons and three extra levels. It was scheduled to have been unveiled on September 14, 2006 during a Nintendo press conference, but was absent from the event. You aim by pointing the Wii Remote at the screen and slash with it for melee attacks, and to zoom a sniper rifle you move the remote towards the TV. Critics went after its graphics and its enemy AI, though they liked the controls. It averages 34 out of 100, the lowest score here.

Players who played it call it one of the worst games on the Wii. The controls were a real attempt at something new, and that makes the rest sadder. It looked old on a console that was not known for its looks, and the enemies did not do much to make up for it.

Which one to play

There you have it, the whole list of the worst Wii games. Plenty of them were made quickly for a famous name, and a few are still good for a laugh with friends.

If you want a good laugh with friends, Ju-on: The Grudge is the one to try, because the flinch meter is a game on its own. Soulcalibur Legends is a fun curiosity if you love the series. If you want to avoid a game entirely, skip Far Cry Vengeance, then both Deathly Hallows games. And for kids who love cartoons, Globs of Doom is the least painful of the tie-ins.
