Death Stranding Original Score

2019 · Playstation 4

Ludvig Forssell's score for Death Stranding is one of the defining game soundtracks of its generation, and it opens with a statement of intent: "Once, There Was an Explosion" lays out the mythic, post-apocalyptic grandeur of Kojima's reconnection epic.

This is the orchestral and electronic score side of the music, separate from the licensed songs by Low Roar and others that defined the walking sequences. "BB's Theme" is the emotional anchor of the entire game, a lullaby that gains devastating weight as Sam's relationship with his Bridge Baby deepens.

"Fragile" captures the vulnerability behind Lea Seydoux's character with delicate precision, and "Heartman" somehow makes a man who dies every 21 minutes feel profoundly human through music alone. "Beached Things" and "Chiral Carcass Culling" shift into pure dread territory, all dissonant tension for the BT encounters that had players holding their breath.

"Stick vs Rope" is Kojima's central metaphor rendered as music -- the push and pull between violence and connection. "The Timefall" captures rain that ages everything it touches with this relentless, melancholic urgency.

"Cargo High" delivers the dopamine rush of a successful delivery, while "Mules" and "Demens" provide the combat intensity for the game's human enemies. The whole score walks the impossible line of making a delivery simulator feel like the most important journey ever undertaken.
