The PS4 was a great console for first-person shooters, and it got going on day one. Killzone: Shadow Fall was a launch title, and within a year Bungie had its first new console series since Halo on PlayStation. Then id Software came back with a new Doom, and MachineGames turned Wolfenstein into a story about people you actually cared about.
It was also the generation where shooters became places you lived in for years. Some of these games got better long after release, and at least one of them can no longer be played at all. One of the best came out in a crowded month and got missed. Here are the 20 best PS4 FPS games.

20. Apex Legends (2019)

Apex Legends came out of nowhere. It was released suddenly in 2019, without any prior marketing or official announcement, and it surpassed 25 million players by the end of its first week. Within its first month it had 50 million. It is a battle royale built around a cast of characters, and new seasons keep adding more of them, like Wattson in season 2.
One of its guns, the CAR SMG, was originally from Titanfall 2, a hint about which family this game belongs to. Critics praised the gameplay and the progression system, along with the way it fuses elements from various genres. Events bring limited-time modes such as shotguns and snipers only. A later mode borrows mechanics from Counter-Strike and Valorant and is the first permanent deviation away from the battle royale format.

19. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017)

The New Colossus is the sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order, and it is set in 1961 in an alternate history where the Nazis won the Second World War. It came out in October 2017 for PS4. MachineGames moved to the id Tech 6 engine, which meant a complete overhaul of the technology and animations. Brian Bloom returned as Blazkowicz and Nina Franoszek returned as Frau Engel, the main villain.
Mick Gordon returned for the music and was joined by Martin Stig Andersen. Heavy weapons run on fuel and electricity, and you loot them from fallen soldiers. Critics praised the characters, the story and the gunplay, while the level design got a mixed response. It won "Best Action Game" at The Game Awards 2017.

18. PlanetSide 2 (2012)

PlanetSide 2 is one of very few MMOFPS games ever released, which means shooter battles with thousands of players at once. It is considered the most successful game in that genre. A custom engine called ForgeLight keeps that many people on the field without the graphics falling apart, at least in theory. In 2020, 1,283 players took part in a single battle, an unofficial record.
Critics liked its scale and its graphics, but some reviewers were divided over the free-to-play business model, the technical glitches and how hard it is for new players. Players are split the same way. Some say it is so good, some call it a buggy mess, and some say both and keep playing anyway.

17. Star Wars Battlefront (2015)

This Battlefront came out in November 2015 for PS4. It sold more than 14 million copies worldwide. Critics praised the gameplay and the visuals, and they criticized the lack of content at launch and the season pass. The maps set in space only arrived later through downloadable packs, including a Death Star pack and a Rogue One pack that added Scarif.
Fighter Squadron is a starship-only mode, basically a team deathmatch in the sky. Walker Assault got criticism in the beta for how hard it was to win as the Rebels, which is at least faithful to The Empire Strikes Back. A sequel, Star Wars Battlefront II, followed on November 17, 2017.

16. Battlefield V (2018)

Battlefield V moved the series to World War II and works as a continuation of Battlefield 1. It came out in November 2018 for PS4. The announcement trailer caused a big backlash from some fans, and the game launched with too little content. It still sold 7.3 million units by the end of 2018, which counted as a commercial disappointment for Electronic Arts.
Critics praised the gameplay and the new multiplayer modes. The war stories are short campaigns from different corners of the war. In "The Last Tiger", released on December 5, 2018, you follow a German Tiger I tank crew in the closing days of the war. Nordlys puts you in Norway in 1943 as Astrid, a resistance fighter trying to stop a heavy water plant. One mode was handed to Criterion Games and has the biggest map in the series.

15. Killzone: Shadow Fall (2013)

Shadow Fall was a launch title for the PlayStation 4, out on November 15, 2013 in North America. It is the sixth Killzone, and it introduced a new in-house engine, Decima. By January 2014 it had sold over 2.1 million copies, which made it the first PS4 game to pass the million mark. The music moved away from orchestras toward ambient sounds and electronica, with Tyler Bates and the artist Lorn writing for each side.
Some critics found it short on new ideas for one of the first games of a new generation. Destructoid liked it a lot and gave it 9/10, saying "Killzone: Shadow Fall is the game that will make you happy to own a PS4." The online servers were shut down on August 12, 2022, so today it is a campaign-only game.

14. Borderlands 3 (2019)

Borderlands 3 is a first-person looter shooter and the fourth main game in the series. It came out on September 13, 2019, seven years after the events of Borderlands 2 in its story. You pick one of four new Vault Hunters and travel to several planets to stop Troy and Tyreen Calypso, twin cult leaders who want the power of alien Vaults. Guns are procedurally generated, so the next one you pick up might be the best gun you have ever held.
Up to four players can play together, and you can now slide and mantle. Familiar faces show up, including Tiny Tina, who now goes by just Tina. It had the best initial sales in the series, more than five million copies in five days. Critics liked how it plays, though some found it short on innovation.

13. Prey (2017)

Prey was made by Arkane Austin after Dishonored, with Raphaël Colantonio directing. It is largely unrelated to the 2006 game of the same name and kept only the name and the broad idea of being hunted by aliens. You wake up on Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032, and the aliens on board, the Typhon, have taken over. The game mixes first-person shooting with role-playing, stealth and Metroidvania design.
It came out on May 5, 2017, and critics praised the setting and the environmental storytelling. Arkane later added Mooncrash, an expansion with roguelike elements. Players who found it call it a gem that never got the attention it deserved. It is the most underplayed great game on this list.

12. Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)

The New Order came out on May 20, 2014, and it was the first new Wolfenstein since 2009. It is set in an alternate history 1960s Europe where the Nazis won the Second World War, and you play war veteran B.J. Blazkowicz trying to stop them. MachineGames got the rights from id Software in 2010 and wanted players to care about Blazkowicz as a character, something earlier games never tried.
You can lean around, over and under cover, and you can sneak through a level or start an intense firefight. Health comes in sections that regenerate, and losing a full section means finding a health pack. Critics praised the combat and the story. Players who tried it keep pushing it on anyone who has not, and it got a stand-alone expansion, The Old Blood, in May 2015.

11. Far Cry 5 (2018)

Far Cry 5 takes the series to Hope County, Montana, where a doomsday cult called The Project at Eden's Gate has taken over. Its leader is Joseph Seed, and you spend the game freeing the county from him and his Heralds. It came out in March 2018 for PS4. The game caused controversy when it was announced during a period of heightened political conflict.
It was also a huge hit. It became the fastest-selling game in the franchise, grossing over $310 million in its first week, and had sold over 10 million units by March 2020. Critics praised the open world and the soundtrack, and they had complaints about the story. A sequel to its story, Far Cry New Dawn, came out in February 2019.

10. Doom Eternal (2020)

Doom Eternal is the sequel to Doom (2016) and the seventh game in the series. It came out for PS4 in March 2020. You play the Doom Slayer fighting off a demonic invasion of Earth, and combat is built around aggressive resource management: you stay alive by executing and chainsawing demons. The game adds platforming and a bigger arsenal.
Mick Gordon composed the soundtrack, though he and id Software later ended their relationship after a conflict. Critics praised the campaign and the combat, and some disliked the extra story and the platforming. It had the highest opening weekend sales in the franchise and got five nominations at The Game Awards 2020. Battlemode lets one player be the Slayer against two players controlling demons.

9. Doom (2016)

The 2016 Doom comes from id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter and created multiplayer deathmatch. The original Doom from 1993 was so influential that Doom clone was the name for the whole genre for several years. This one brings it back as a fast modern shooter full of relentless demons.
There is a single-player campaign through the depths of Hell and a multiplayer mode for playing against friends. SnapMap is a level editor that lets you create your own content and share it with other players. When players are asked for one great single-player shooter on PS4, this is the answer they give first. The sequel made it a pair you can play back to back.

8. Destiny 2 (2017)

Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter with role-playing and MMO elements, and this time the planets have characters to talk to outside the social spaces. It received generally favorable reviews and won awards at The Game Awards 2017. Bungie supported it with 10 expansion packs, and in Year Three it went free-to-play, with only the expansions and seasonal content costing money.
The game kept changing, sometimes in strange ways. The original Red War campaign was removed, along with the first two expansions and later the Forsaken campaign. The Final Shape in June 2024 ended the Light and Darkness saga, and the June 2026 update was announced as the last one. The game remains online and playable, and Bungie has since revealed plans to return to the series.

7. Rainbow Six Siege (2015)

Siege happened because Ubisoft cancelled a game called Patriots and decided to reboot the series. The team consulted real counter-terrorism units, and the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege inspired the map Consulate. It came out in December 2015. Two teams of five take turns attacking and defending, and nobody respawns during a round. You can blow holes in walls and floors to open new lines of sight.
Initial sales were weak. Then Ubisoft kept releasing free downloadable content, the player base grew a lot, and critics came around to calling it one of the best multiplayer games around. Angela Bassett voices Six, the director of Team Rainbow. Players describe it as an absolute blast they have trouble putting down.

6. Far Cry 4 (2014)

Far Cry 4 takes place in Kyrat, in the Himalayas, and parts of it were inspired by the Nepalese Civil War. Troy Baker plays Pagan Min, a villain whose look came from the Japanese films Ichi the Killer and Brother. Work on it began right after Assassin's Creed III shipped. It came out in November 2014 and sold over 10 million units by March 2020.
The map runs from lush forests to snowcapped mountains. You can scout from a gyrocopter and ride a six-ton elephant into an enemy camp. The wildlife includes vicious honey badgers, and they are the scariest thing in the game. Critics praised the open world and the characters, though some found it too similar to Far Cry 3.

5. Battlefield 1 (2016)

Battlefield 1 took the series back to World War I. It came out in October 2016, and critics saw it as an improvement over Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline. Its single-player mode, War Stories, follows different soldiers on the Western Front, the Italian Front, Gallipoli and in Arabia. If you die in the prologue, you take control of another soldier instead of loading a checkpoint.
The multiplayer leans on the setting. One mode is about carrier pigeons: you protect the player writing the message, then let the bird go. The first team to release 3 pigeons wins. The London Calling map has a zeppelin. It sold over 15 million copies and was followed by Battlefield V.

4. Titanfall 2 (2016)

Titanfall 2 came out on October 28, 2016. You play a Militia rifleman who bonds with a Titan, a giant robot, after its pilot is killed. On foot you wall-run and double-jump, and inside the Titan you fight like a tank with opinions. Buddy cop films and Half-Life inspired the story.
Critics loved it, and it still underperformed because it came out between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Six Titans were available at launch, and Monarch came later as free DLC in May 2017. Players single out the campaign as one of the best parts. If you missed it in 2016, you were in good company.

3. Destiny (2014)

Destiny came out on September 9, 2014, and it was Bungie's first new console series since Halo, the start of a 10-year deal with Activision. Bungie called it a "shared-world shooter" instead of an MMO: you meet other players through matchmaking as you play. It made over $325 million at retail in its first five days, the biggest launch for a new franchise at the time.
Critics liked how it plays and complained about the story and the grinding after the campaign. The Taken King expansion in September 2015 changed much of the core gameplay, and Rise of Iron followed a year later. It won the BAFTA for Best Game in 2014.

2. Overwatch (2016)

Overwatch came out of a cancelled project. Blizzard dropped its MMO Titan in 2014, and part of that team made a hero shooter inspired by Team Fortress 2 and the popularity of online battle arena games. It came out for PS4 in May 2016, and its open beta drew in nearly 10 million players. You can change your hero during a match.
Critics praised its accessibility and its cartoonish art style. Blizzard added new heroes and maps for free, and it made over US$1 billion in its first year. It had more than 50 million players after three years. On October 3, 2022, Blizzard shut down the servers, the game became unplayable, and Overwatch 2 replaced it the next day.

1. Battlefield 4 (2013)

Battlefield 4 is the thirteenth game in the series and the sequel to Battlefield 3, set six years later during the fictional "War of 2020". It came out in October and November 2013 for PS4 and the other big consoles of the time. You play Recker, who can order his squad to attack anything he can see. For the first time in the series, you can spot enemies for your team in the campaign too.
The multiplayer is where it lives, and its new features included Levolution and naval warfare. Critics praised the multiplayer and graphics, while the campaign got criticism and the multiplayer launched with lots of bugs. Players say it is hard to stop playing, and they recommend it more than any other PS4 shooter.

Which one to play
There you have it, the whole list of the best PS4 FPS games. The top ten would hold up on any console.
If you are not sure where to start, play Titanfall 2 for the campaign. For big online battles, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1 are the ones. If you want a single-player shooter, play Doom and then Doom Eternal, and follow with Wolfenstein: The New Order for the story. For a tactical game with friends, try Rainbow Six Siege. If you want an open world, start with Far Cry 4. And for a hidden pick, try Prey.
