The Vita had a gorgeous OLED screen. Somehow, these boxes still made its games look like they were printed on a receipt.
10. Asphalt: Injection (2011)

A yellow sports car skids through a street at dusk under a chrome logo, and that is the whole idea. It could be the cover of any racing game on any machine from the decade.
9. Putty Squad (2013)

A blue blob with goggly eyes bounces through a jungle of giant mushrooms, all in glossy 3D. It is cheerful enough. However, this game was first developed for the Amiga back in 1994 and only published two decades later, so a cover with a bit more history in it would have been nice.
8. Dungeon Hunter: Alliance (2011)

Three brooding heroes in capes raise their weapons in a haze of purple lightning. They look like stock fantasy art that could sell anything, from a mobile game to a body spray.
7. Ridge Racer (2011)

A white car with glowing blue lights skids against a black background, and it looks fine. Unfortunately, the game was panned for its lack of content, with much of it locked behind paid downloads, so even this plain box promised more than the cartridge held.
6. Lost Dimension (2014)

A pink and grey tower made of blocks crumbles into the sky, as if the image itself was glitching, under a thin white logo. It is not ugly, but it is so vague that it tells you nothing about a game full of characters.
5. Army Corps of Hell (2011)

A demon skull with glowing red eyes and a third eye in its forehead grins out of a wall of flame. It looks like a heavy metal T-shirt from a market stall. That is a shame, because the studio behind it, Entersphere, was founded by a Nintendo veteran.
4. Unit 13 (2012)

A stencilled logo sits on a white box among ink splatters and a black blob of machinery. It looks unfinished, which is a sad way to go out: this was the last game Zipper Interactive made before the studio closed.
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops - Declassified (2012)

A soldier stands in grey smoke so thick that he is barely there, and the logo is the only thing with any contrast. Fittingly, even before release, the graphics were criticized.
2. Reality Fighters (2012)

A row of photo-real men pose in boxing gloves and a karate gi, with a guy in a white shirt folding his arms in the middle. The game builds a fighter out of a photo of your own face, so the box is accurate. It is also a strangely still picture of a fight.
1. Smart As... (2012)

A white plaster head in blue sunglasses shares the box with a jigsaw piece, a pencil, a board game token and some floating numbers. Is it a quiz or a puzzle? The box has no idea, and neither will you.
The covers that got it right: the best PS Vita box art.
